Precast CovidSince early in Q2 of 2020, we have seen a dramatic growth in inquiries from large precast manufacturers who want to ‘go digital’ in their plants. They all have their own specific needs, of course, but the acceleration of interest suggests that there is something bigger at work. Something that suggests a change in thinking or a transformation. It feels as if the industry has reached a tipping point, much the same way that the world rushed to embrace Zoom to manage through COVID.

We think it has.

When business experiences a major shock like COVID, it takes managers out of their daily routines and prompts an urgency to ask: “What can we do to make sure we will be okay?”.

It usually starts simply: “We have to be able to do more with less.”

And so many will look for solutions that will address basic issues, such as: “We spend too much time creating reports.” and “We‘re wasting time searching for products in the yard”.

But the most sophisticated managers dig deeper: ”What can we do to create systemic change that will enable continuing productivity improvement?”

So, it‘s not surprising that we’ve had a surge in interest from large, multi-plant manufacturers who are telling us:

”We want to an easier way to analyze our plant’s performance.”

Our thesis is validated by a September 30 article published by McKinsey & Company, The next normal in construction material distribution. It summarizes the findings of a survey they conducted about technology transformation in the construction industry. The lede:

“Two-thirds of the industry executives we recently surveyed agree that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this transformation; half report that they have already raised their level of digitization investment.”

Going digital in your plant provides immediate savings and it creates a foundation for analytics that can provide insights that are not easily revealed using paper records. Such as:

  • What is the trend in ‘red flag’ issues by form or bed?
  • Where are the most common bottlenecks in meeting delivery dates?
  • How can we optimize our scheduling?

This is what we do at Idencia. Would you like to see how much the status quo is costing your plant? Visit our Cost of Not Going Digital Calculator.
